Exchange buddy
Would you like to make new friends from other countries, have an interest in other cultures, and enjoy taking care of others? Then you are a perfect fit as an exchange buddy.
As part of our European cooperation, Open House Europe, we welcome exchange volunteers from other countries during our festival. These volunteers will support our on-site volunteers, participate in our festival, and need to be looked after in the best possible way. As an exchange buddy, you act as a coordinator for these volunteers, helping them navigate the festival and ensuring they experience Stockholm and the festival in the best way possible.
For this volunteer role, you are expected to be available throughout the entire festival to give our exchange volunteers the best possible experience.
Site host
Are you social, accommodating, and enjoy meeting new people? Then apply for the role of Site Host!
As a Site Host, you are, as the name suggests, a host at one or several different sites. This might involve welcoming visitors, distributing program brochures, answering questions about the festival, and assisting the exhibitor with tasks such as scanning tickets, counting visitors, or managing queues during busy times. You will work directly under an Area Coordinator who will provide you with help and support during the festival weekend.
For this volunteer role, you will coordinate with our volunteer coordinator to agree on the times and sites where you will assist.
Area coordinator
Do you enjoy having an overview, managing and balancing multiple tasks simultaneously? Then apply for the role of Area Coordinator!
As an Area Coordinator, you are responsible for several sites/program points within a geographical area. You maintain contact with the exhibitors and assist with answering their questions before and during the festival weekend. You are responsible for a number of site hosts located at the sites within your area. You act as an extension of the project team during the festival weekend and are a crucial piece in ensuring the festival's success.
For this volunteer role, you are expected to be available throughout the entire festival, and we would like you to attach your resume to your application.
Media volunteer
Are you good at photography and/or filming? Do you have your own camera? Then you should apply for this volunteer role!
As a media volunteer, you will work with the festival's photography and filming activities during the festival weekend. During the festival, you will visit various program points and then deliver the photos to the Open House Stockholm project team. Your photos and video clips will be used in Open House Stockholm's channels during the festival and in other promotional materials for the festival.
You will coordinate with our media coordinator to decide which program points you will visit and on which days you can participate.
For this volunteer role, you are required to have access to your own camera.
Information host
Are you cheerful, social, and enjoy meeting new people? Then we need you as an Information Host!
During the festival weekend, we need your help to spread the word about the festival. Alongside other information hosts, you will inform passersby about the opportunity to visit exciting places and buildings for free.
For this volunteer role, you will coordinate with our volunteer coordinator to agree on the times you will assist.
Melker about being a volunteer
Melker Ferdfelt, a Civil Engineering student from KTH, served as an area manager for Open House Stockholm 2022. Here’s how Melker responds to some questions about his work as a volunteer:
How was the volunteer work at OHS?
"Volunteering with Open House Stockholm has been very interesting and rewarding. The most interesting part was meeting the people behind all the different program points and getting to hear all their thoughts and ideas. Through the festival, I also had the opportunity, as a student in civil engineering, to get to know different parts of the industry outside of school. It was also really fun to see all the cool buildings that you normally can't get into and to meet people who share an interest in buildings and our local environment."
What did you do as a volunteer?
"As an area manager, I was responsible for volunteers within a geographical area. I made sure that all volunteers were in the right place, and if someone was sick, I had to reassign them. I also traveled between program points and provided support where it was needed."
What was the most enjoyable part of being involved?
"As an area manager and volunteer, I had the opportunity to meet exhibitors, volunteers, and organizers both before and after the festival weekend, which was a perfect chance to ask some extra questions and discuss architecture and urban planning.
During the festival, I participated in the walking tour of Södertörns Villastad by Magelungen, close to where I live. There, I met several people from the local area, all of whom had experienced the houses in different ways. This allowed us to have a great discussion, and it was very interesting to hear the different perspectives on how the area was perceived."
