CAMPUS ALBANO
AKADEMISKA HUS
Campus Albano will become a scientific hub that connects the university capital Stockholm and forms a sustainable campus with educational environments for students and researchers. Around 1,000 student housing and premises for commercial services are also being built here.
As Stockholm University and KTH develop, new premises are needed in both the short and long term where the universities can operate and cooperate with each other and the surrounding society. Right now, a total of around 70,000 square meters of university premises will be built and around 1,000 student housing.
The first sod for Albano was broken in November 2015. The buildings in the area will consist of both activity-based and traditional office and teaching environments with high flexibility that can suit the needs of different businesses. The teaching premises will also contain break areas and kitchenettes for students. In the buildings there will also be general services, including cafes and restaurants, and a joint teaching lab for Stockholm University and KTH (a House of Science). The idea is that a diversity of activities should contribute to a living environment during all hours of the day.
Sustainable urban design
The development of the Albano campus takes place in harmony with nature, where great consideration is given to biological diversity. The goal is to become a role model in sustainable urban construction. In the planning work, research within sustainable urban development has been integrated by a research group at the Stockholm Resilience Center and KTH Architecture on behalf of Akademiska Hus providing views and proposals based on social-ecological urban design. That researchers actively participate in a planning process in this way makes Albano a unique project.
Citylab
Campus Albano was one of the pilot projects in Citylab in 2016, which is a forum for knowledge sharing in sustainable urban development organized by the Sweden Green Building Council. Citylab's main purpose is to support urban development projects that face the sustainability challenges of the future. Citylab's pilot program ran throughout 2016 and included six two-day meetings, dialogue and knowledge sharing with the other 11 participating projects as well as the development of a sustainability program with an action and follow-up plan.
Today, Citylab's guide for sustainable urban development is in the planning stage version 3.0, which is an evolution of the guide that Campus Albano used during the pilot round in 2016. Albano has continued to be involved in the work of developing Citylab after the pilot round ended in December 2016, in the form of the project beta-tested certification indicators for Citylab in the spring of 2017. In the fall of 2019, campus Albano's sustainability work was certified according to the Citylab Guide, Sustainable urban development in the planning stage, Version 3".
Campus Albano is currently working with its sustainability program (which is available in both a full-length version and as a short version) and its action plan actively in all sub-projects that are ongoing at campus Albano. The sustainability program describes the goals for Albano linked to Citylab's overall sustainability goals as well as the process for the sustainability work in the project.
